Fleming Farms 2012

The current state of our garden, tempting fate as we planted well before the generally recognized "last frost" date of May 15.  There are tomatoes inside those Water Walls, and they have already set little fruits.

Peppers and strawberries
Volunteer onions and lettuce from last year, tiny radishes sprouting, carrots not doing diddly.  Scarlet runner pole beans and purple bush beans planted behind.
Jack contemplating pulling out all my seed markers; snow peas, zucchini, yellow squash, acorn squash and watermelon planted behind.
Landscaping fabric stakes as teethers...
New landscaping in the front to repair Sam's grave-digging.
Beautiful crab apple blossoms mean only one thing - a ton of apples to clean up this fall. Yay.

Bowl-A-Rama

Sam's dad serves on the board of Hands of the Carpenter, a local non-profit group that provides car maintenance and repair to low-income women. The organization hosted a fundraising bowl-a-thon, so we headed to the AMF Lanes to have "new adventures", as Ryan puts it.

Of course none of us thought to bring our cameras, so these photos were taken with Sam's phone

The boys certainly did not know what to expect, and once there had a hard time processing everything that was going on - loud music! bangs and crashes! balls and more balls! chocolate chip cookies!

Fortunately, there were lots of snuggly adults to go around:

Our lane had bumpers to prevent gutter balls, and a ramp for the kids to use to push the ball down the lane.  Ryan was pretty impressed with the hand dryer.

He took his time picking out the perfect ball, then attempted to carry it to the lane. With help, he gave it a big push off the ramp and watched it head toward the pins.

Jack even got to take a few turns, and he loved it.  At different times the boys even had a higher score than their grandma and their aunt (but not Mama, who grew up in going bowling as the default social activity... and who won the first game).

Joyous Rock Stars

Sam took this video of our little rock stars - Nanny Amanda gave us this keyboard (Ryan calls it a "com-puno") a long time ago; it takes long vacations in the cupboard because it comes on at full volume and Ryan pretends not to know how to turn it down... but when it is granted its freedom we get a full-on musical revue.

I can't decide which is cuter, that Jack joined his brother in concert or that he is wearing two different Crocs (different sizes even - the one with the white border is his brother's).

Toddler Botanica

We went to the Denver Botanic Gardens with the Zwyers today. It's still pretty early in the season - even though we've had crazy warm weather lately - so we didn't expect to see many flowers.

The fountains, of course, are always a toddler favorite.
They had a number of stations set up so kids could explore different botanical concepts - this one had trays of pine cones, seed pods and leaves.  David actually attempted to use the supplied magnifying glass to examine the specimens; my kids just wanted to gnaw on them.
David loves to ride on the front of our double stroller, but he has learned from experience that his legs are so long he has to hold them up the whole time so as not to inadvertently act as a braking mechanism...
Despite my attempts to interest them in the trays of aromatic herbs behind me, the boys spent a good 20 minutes playing with the water fountain.
Jack was just along for the ride... if he couldn't pick it and eat it, he wasn't interested.

Stones Along the Miles...

I have been selling, donating, and handing down Jack's outgrown baby items as fast as he's done using them.  This weekend we bid adieu to one of the biggest piece of baby gear - the crib.

Ryan and Jack recently decided that their favorite place to play was in the crib, and I started to worry about Jack trying to climb out of the crib in the middle of the night.  I got a good deal on a toddler bed from one of my coworkers, and today we decided to make the big switch.

The "Jack in Overalls" quilt my grandmother sewed for him fits perfectly!

Jack immediately climbed up and went "nigh-nighs" (with Duck and Bank, of course)

We kept the musical aquarium nightlight
I couldn't tell who was more excited about the bed...

 Jack in Overalls!

I freecycled the crib, giving it to a young mother-to-be who was very grateful.  Sam was a little emotional about the change, but Jack has adjusted to the new bed well.
